Does the GMAT Assess Your Managerial Skills ?

The GMAT (Graduate Management Assessment Test), administered by the Graduate Management Assessment Council, is perhaps one of the savviest tests offered today. Scrupulously designed, the exam does not only test knowledge of math and English – it also evaluates how effectively the test-taker can harness this knowledge to deal with difficult problems; but how does the test accomplish this?

Verbal: Not Your Everyday Language Skills

This Verbal chapter tests several things. Firstly, proficiency in SWAE (Standard Written American English), the standard form of communication in today's business world, is evaluated in the Sentence Correction portion of the exam. Although on the surface this part may seem like a series of grammatical exercises that require the test-taker to select the most "correct" phrasing of a certain sentence, it in fact also requires a discerning eye for language efficiency, namely "how to say the same thing in the most economical way possible"; in the business world, where "short is sweet" and clarity is key, choosing the least verbose option indicates an ability to infer from a given context, however convoluted, and hew to standards of efficacious, clear and concise speech. A good manager should choose his words wisely, no?
